Liability Insurance for Students as guests?
We will have some overseas students staying with the family this year for short periods (2 – 6 weeks). They are not tenants but will integrate with the family. the school they are attending in the UK will pay me for their stay. What liability insurance do i need to cover any claims for injury etc? Where can I get it from? My current building and contents insurance provider has told me that my policy doesn’t cover it.
If your insurer has advised you are not covered it could invalidate your whole policy if you suffer a loss. Particularly theft. You need to speak with a broker which will extend your policy to cover paying guests to cover the relevant liability cover. Although they are not lodgers the extension is paying guests and if you look through your policy at the moment you will see various exclusions.
After you have the right cover, theft cover will be restricted to forced and violent entry and or exit as if the students take from your home, as you invited them in, it would not be covered. Also malicious damage would be excluded if they caused it. All other theft cover and malicious damage by an unknown third party subject to force or violence would be covered. The most important item is the liability element which will be covered.
