Glasses lost at childcare – who’s responsible for replacement?

I got back from an interstate trip last night to find out that my 2 year olds reading glasses had gone missing the day before while at daycare. They have apparently been looking for them and have/are calling the parents of the children who were there that day with no luck. I am wondering, if they can’t be found, who is responsible for the cost of replacement – us or the child care provider? I need to look into our house and contents insurance to see if it covers it but should the daycare cover some or all of the cost? (They weren’t cheap and we would have trouble financially if insurance doesn’t cover it).

Anyone with experience or legal knowledge in this area?

I do not have any legal knowledge, persay, but I do work at a montessori school. I would say that it is the school’s responsibilty to replace or pay for any lost items such as glasses. Had it been a toy I would say that the school is not responsible because that is a “luxury” item that should not be at school. However, since the glasses are necessary for the child’s vision, and they are responsible for your child during the time that he is there, then they are responsible. If they are not found, I would speak to the director about possible compensation for the glasses.
